Abuse and Violence Prevention

Family violence programming has been a priority area of research for PLEIS-NB since we opened our doors in 1989.  Over the early years we created many pamphlets and resources for abused women, and initiated special campaigns to create awareness of family violence issues.  One of our first collaborations in 1992 involved working with healthcare providers – doctors and nurses – to create a lapel button that could be worn by a healthcare worker to encourage victims of family violence to disclose abuse.  The button said – We treat woman abuse seriously.  Many more special projects on family violence followed.

In 2006, PLEIS partnered with Gignoo Transition House to create a toolkit and website called The Healing Journey with family violence materials specifically designed for Aboriginal communities.  Most recently in 2009, PLEIS-NB partnered with the Miramichi Family Violence Prevention Network and the Family Violence Outreach Coordinator to create a public awareness of family violence campaign called Safer Families…Safer Communities. This campaign features fact sheets, posters, magnets and resource cards.  For more information on our family violence projects, check out our Abuse and Violence publications or read about them in the featured programs overview.

We are pleased to say that all of our family violence materials have been created in collaboration with stakeholder groups, such as police and RCMP, victim services, legal professionals, transition houses, the crisis community, justice and social service organizations, and family violence research teams, as well as various government departments.

Over the years PLEIS-NB has broadened the scope of our work on abuse and violence to include child abuse, dating violence, abuse of seniors and disabled adults, crime prevention, bullying, and other forms of harassment and violence in schools.  PLEIS-NB has created numerous publications and resources for these different target audiences.  We encourage you to check out our publications on these topics under Abuse and violence.
