New pamphlet released on mental health and criminal justice

Public Legal Education and Information Service of New Brunswick (PLEIS-NB) has worked collaboratively with the Addiction and Mental Health Services Unit of the New Brunswick Department of Health to create a new publication on the interaction between mental health and the criminal justice system.

The pamphlet, entitled “Accused of a Crime: Mental Health and the Criminal Justice Process” explains how and why the criminal justice system can take the mental health of a person charged with a crime into account.  The pamphlet clarifies the legal concepts ‘unfit to stand trial’ and ‘not criminally responsible on account of a mental disorder’ and explains the role of the Review Board.

The new pamphlets are currently being distributed to Community Mental Health Centres, Legal Aid offices, Crown Prosecutors offices, libraries, community agencies, and other places where the public can access them.  If you are interested in obtaining copies, please contact us at pleisnb@web.ca or call 506-453-5369.
