New Brunswick Human Rights Day - September 15, 2012

Saturday, September 15, is New Brunswick Human Rights Day which marks the anniversary of the coming into effect of the New Brunswick Human Rights Act in 1967.

The passage of this Act was a major advance for human rights in New Brunswick. It unified the various laws that prohibited certain types of discrimination and established the Human Rights Commission to enforce the new legislation. For the first time, it gave New Brunswick an effective mechanism to counter discrimination in certain important private and public sector activities that fall under provincial jurisdiction including mainly employment, housing and public services.
