International Day of the Girl

The United Nations has declared October 11, 2012 as the world's first International Day of the Girl Child.

This day was formally established in December 2011 following an international campaign at the United Nations, led by the Government of Canada in partnership with Plan Canada. This day provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the many challenges faced by girls, to promote equal treatment and equal opportunities for girls, and to provide a means of both celebrating and taking action.
