 Medical assistance in dying

In February 2015, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that parts of the Criminal Code that prohibited medical assistance in dying under certain conditions were contrary to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The Supreme Court gave the government until June 6, 2016, to create a new law. In response, the federal government introduced legislation providing for medical assistance in dying - Bill C-12. That legislation received Royal Assent on June 17th, 2016.
