Brush Up on Bonfire Laws!

Beautiful summer weather is finally upon us.  For many New Brunswickers, that means getting outside and enjoying good company and the splendor of the outdoors around a bonfire or campfire.

Depending on environmental conditions, even small fires can be dangerous.  Remember that provincial law requires residents and non-residents to obtain permission from the Department of Energy and Resource Development before they burn.  For small fires (category 1), call toll-free at 1-866-8080 (or 444-5445 in Fredericton) and get oral permission.  For large fires (categories 2 to 4), please visit a local ERD office to book an inspection and obtain a burn permit.

Also, be aware that cities and towns have their own bylaws about burning.  Please call your local municipal government and find out whether there are restrictions on burning.
