For the Sake of the Children – A Free Information Program for Parents Living Separately

Separation can be a time of pain, confusion and sorrow. Parents and their children may experience a great sense of loss and will often need help to understand and cope with all the changes that come with separation.

For the Sake of the Children is a free six-hour program divided into two sessions of three hours each. It is designed to provide the type of information parents need:

  • To understand what they are going through, both legally and emotionally; and
  • To help them cope with and adjust to separation so that they can help their children adjust.

Separation is an adult issue. Children do not make the decision to separate, yet they are greatly affected by that decision.

The effects of separation on children largely depend on how parents manage their relationships after the separation.

Separation is difficult. However, research and experience show that it is continued conflict between the parents that causes the most harm to children, not the separation itself.

For the Sake of the Children teaches ways to reduce the conflict between parents and also relieve the stress they are experiencing. It focuses on helping parents help their children.

The program covers:

  • Adults`experience of separation;
  • Children’s experience of separation;
  • Children’s needs at different ages;
  • Planning parenting after separation;
  • Alternatives to Court;
  • Reorganizing;
  • Legal issues;
  • Economic issues;
  • The costs of conflict and the benefits of keeping conflict low;
  • New partner issues;
  • Communicating with your child’s other parent;
  • Communication with your child;
  • Effects of conflict on children.

Professionals knowledgeable in separation and divorce issues conduct the program. They will use videos during the sessions and participants will receive handouts and printed resource materials, as well as a certificate of completion.

For the Sake of the Children is especially beneficial for parents experiencing separation.

Both parents are encouraged to participate and will be registered to attend separate sessions. The program is also open to others who must also register to attend.

COVID Protocols

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are all taking extra precautions to stay healthy, and have set-up COVID safety protocols in each location where classes are being offered across the province. We ask that you assist us in our efforts to keep everyone safe at the FTSOTC sessions by following the protocols below:

  1. If you are sick or experiencing any sign of COVID, please do not attend the class and let us know that you will not be attending as soon as you can, by calling our toll-free line at 1-888-281-8081, or by sending an email to FTSOTC@gnb.ca.
  2. Please bring a face mask to the session. You will be required to wear a mask when you cannot maintain physical distancing in narrow areas such as walking past another person in the meeting room, walking down a hall way, exiting a room or in the washroom. A mask will be provided if you do not have one.
  3. When arriving at the facility, follow the signage and directional arrows.
  4. Upon entry to the meeting room, a security person will ask you COVID screening questions and refuse entry if you are experiencing 2 or more symptoms. You will be permitted to enter if you only have one symptom. Security will not permit your entry if you respond yes to other COVID screening questions, or if you do not follow the safety protocols at the session. The security person will sanitize your hands as you enter the meeting room each time.
  5. Surfaces in the meeting room will be sanitized and seating will be set up for people to sit 2 meters (6 feet) apart.

Your safety is very important to us and we appreciate your cooperation. The details of these protocols and how it impacts you will be explained during the registration process, and as you arrive and begin your classes.
